The message of Genesis House’s new vibrant bench

As Genesis House continues its transitional housing project, one step along the way has been to commission a symbolic addition of inclusion for the space.

An orange bench — with the words “Every Child Matters” — was unveiled at the organization’s recent Ride for Refuge event at Morden Park.

‘A beautiful bench’

Kari Kauenhofen (a team member in the organization who works on the transitional housing capital campaign) said the idea developed during a meeting.

“It was actually quite interesting. Our staff were sitting around the table, and our cultural support staff member sat there and said, ‘I would really love to see one of those orange benches,’ and all of a sudden, we have an orange Every Child Matters bench, a beautiful bench.”

A special significance

Kauenhofen said the brilliant orange creation, which is the work of Maverick Industries, will hold special significance for the transitional housing facility.

“It’s one of our first pieces of furniture for … our 25-unit transitional housing that we’re starting to build this fall,” she said.
